The craziness outside the window
Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008So I wake up from what was a good night’s sleep to the whirring sound of NYC. I know NYC and I understand its pulse and rhythm - something was clearly askew. I joke lovingly to my wife “maybe Osama is in town” given the thunderous response of firetrucks, police cars and a number of choppers. I look out my window and to my amazement I see this:
Make no mistake, this was happening right outside my apartment. I had noted only two days earlier that the top of this crane was higher than I had ever previously seen it and it looked more precarious and more dangerous than ever before. I had made that very comment to my brother who was making a rare visit to town the weekend prior.
The ultimate calamity is for the two gentlemen who died in this accident / tragedy. Whatever your beliefs wish the best for their families and for the father of the crane operator who had to mourn his son on a stretcher in a NYC street.
I don’t have a point of wisdom to add here e.g. don’t walk near cranes, watch for falling objects, this city is crazy, etc. just another note in the ongoing dialogue of what has transpired most recently in my neck of the woods. The old adage still adheres: safety first.
