More FileMaker 9 Details Emerge Ahead Of Release
On the heels of the last ThinkSecret report on FileMaker 9 (which has me underwhelmed), more details are slipping through. ArsTechnica has posted a basic summary of the ThinkSecret update. But interestingly, and moreso than most of the article is the response of some of the readers - most seem to concur. The usual gripes appear: lack of full SQL read/write support, scripting vs. embedding routines/behaviors with fields and layout objects, etc., the modal interface, and more.
Where FM still has me underwhelmed is in the nature of the layout consistency and features, REPORTING, REPORTING, and the ability to fully modify the interface. The webviewer is an interesting way to generate reports, but it also necessitates generating pretty HTML pages instead of natively rendering the reporting graphics. For the time being, these would appear to be just cursory thoughts, but ‘m working on a screen prototypes on how I would do it differently.
Having said all that, I’m off to the slopes of Aspen and I’ll hopefully return for more tech goodness ASAP.
Cheers!
mm…agree with you. Just think if FileMaker would have all that. It is really frustrating when I am an expert in FileMaker. I really dont want to learn something else from start. I am stressed by the thought of having to start with dotnet or php/mySql instead. FilMaker Inc could easy take a huge jump forward is they just really wanted. And maybe Steve Jobs had the time to think about it seriously. Well…I was just curious if any more news about the SQL-funcionality is out. Cheers!
The FMP organization continually amuse me in not listening to users and their feature requests. Some of these features have been asked for 10 years. Whats even more amusing is that the FMP developers stick around and are so loyal to the product and ignorant to the alternatives. Try Servoy this product answers all your FMP gripes and wish lists i’ve seen from FMP developers. It really is Filemaker on steroids.
