GUI Design: Palettes vs. Drawers

By Emile • Jul 31st, 2006 • Category: General

There’s an interesting philosophical GUI-design question which is promulgating amongst Mac-development forums.  That is, the question of whether to use palettes or drawers for displaying relevant or sub-information to the current selection in a window.
You can read more at:

The Flying Meat board, including this post
Gus Mueller’s blog (where it kinda all began)

Ultimately, I think […]

FileMaker & PHP

By Emile • Jul 30th, 2006 • Category: General

On the heels of launching FileMaker 8.5, I received the following via email just a couple of days ago:
FileMaker is pleased to announce the start of a public beta preview of the FileMaker Application Programming Interface (API) for PHP, the leading scripting language for the web, available now at http://www.filemaker.com/phpbeta.
About the FileMaker API for PHP […]

Secret Weapon Notes: Volume 11

By Emile • Jul 28th, 2006 • Category: General

I discovered MacGeekery.com and an interesting and worthwhile read for those of us who haven’t upgraded to a MacBook Pro and are tolerating the former Powerbook line’s poor wireless networking connectivity. There’s an article/tutorial here to help. [Found via TUAW.com]
Ever wanted to build your own digital photo frame. Here’s a fantastic tutorial. (Also, […]

Travelling with loads of crap

By Emile • Jul 26th, 2006 • Category: General

Perhaps when I see stuff like this, it irritates me more than it should.  But ultimately, each of us has our own tendencies and weaknesses.  After growing up in a household filled with a lot of Stuff, I’ve developed a strong aversion to clutter.
There’s no doubt that desktop or home clutter is bad and has […]

Data-Scrubbing A Ruse?

By Emile • Jul 22nd, 2006 • Category: FileMaker, General

So I’m still tinkering with FileMaker 8.5 and I’m not totally sold on the data-scrubbing PR that’s being spun in the direction of users.  For example, is it easy to get prices from a live auction on eBay?  From the visual, we are led to believe that we have to hard-code parts of the example […]

Simpler Software Deployment

By Emile • Jul 14th, 2006 • Category: General

One of the more interesting differences in programming other than poetry of code is the management of the code and the software produced by that code. There are various theories on the deployment of software, but the one gaining the most steam recently has obviously been “less is more, simpler is better, smaller is […]

FileMaker 8.5 Is Out!!

By Emile • Jul 12th, 2006 • Category: General

That’s not REAL news by now (it was announced Monday), but there are some interesting little tidbits in this release beyond the bullets that are being advertised. In the meantime, go visit FileMaker.com for more info. More to come on that…
The posts may come slowly over the next couple of days as I […]

Recovering FileMaker Passwords

By Emile • Jul 3rd, 2006 • Category: FileMaker, General, Software

For those who don’t know, Filemaker offers password and file recovery services in case you ever need to repair a version 7 or 8 file.  But recently, I learned of a tool careof Passware.com and LostPassword.com, called FileMaker Key. The tool resets passwords to any FileMaker file, though version 8, to an 8-character string.  […]

Woohoo - My First Yahoo Publisher Network Check!

By Emile • Jul 1st, 2006 • Category: General

Thank you to all of you who made it possible.  I can at least pay my high-speed internet bill now
In addition, it serves as inspiration, if nothing else, to keep blogging about FileMaker and the rest of the business processes and web-things and sightings that are overly complicated and interesting, respectively.
Thanks again!

Secret Weapon Notes: Volume 10

Being one of those who rent in NYC, I certainly do not think renting is for suckers.
There are 50 ways to become a better designer
The Nikon Stunning Gallery c/o Flickr is another amazing gallery of photos.
It’s not because of Audrey Hepburn & Cary Grant that Vespa became famous (a la Roman Holiday), it’s probably more […]
