Updates

For those that don’t follow Tim Dietrich’s FileMaker Addict blog, you should. If anything, it’s an eye-opener on what other enterprising developers are doing with the FM prowess in addition to just being an interesting read! Tim has also just posted a new interview with Jesse Feiler, take a look…
The second to last Addict that was interviewed (William Porter) recently discussed the wish of having a FileMaker thin client – think of Adobe Reader and PDF files. It’s an interesting idea that we should be able to develop databases that are readable but not modifiable and maybe even have the capability of attaching to an FM server. This seems intuitive enough and I can’t see something like this really cannibalizing on the sales of the FM client. Does web publishing meet this need for some? What are your thoughts? I’m curious…

On the other note of performance statistics, I’ve been measuring the Google Analytics against Performancing’s Metrics against Feedburner. Feeburner doesn’t really compare as it only measures feed subscribers that channel through them, but what I’m gleaning between the two former services I’ll post as soon as my observations are more concrete and seemingly factual. A first thought is that Performancing’s Metrics are much more straightforward, built with that ‘Fisher-Price look‘ and just kinda easy on the eyes – a la Big.com.

OTHER NEWS

  • Janet Tokerud has an important and worthwhile read on some issued with the current v1 and v2 updates to FileMaker 8. DEFINITELY sit down and read if you’ve deployed v8 solutions. She also provides salient links to FM Knowledgebase articles which are fairly helpful
  • If you’re looking for more reading, the Inside Track on FireFox Development is certainly interesting and worthwhile
  • Hallelujah!!!!! Microsoft has released a patch, A FREE PATCH, that allows you to update the Entourage component of Office 2004, for the Mac, to be Spotlight searchable. That’s huge! I’m delighted to see that Microsoft is providing such an important feature as a free update. The upgrade from Office X to Office 2004 proved less than interesting and beneficial after the cost other than Entourage’s Project Center and Excel’s Page Layout mode – the former of which was marginalized by the lack of Spotlight support. I myself, have moved almost entirely away from Entourage (I do miss the built-in newsreader) and have succumb to the immediate satisfaction of Apple updates in the Mail app. Anyone else in the same boat? What are your thoughts on Entourage?
  • If you’re in need of free and fantastic mini icons, take a look at Fam Fam’s Silk icons which have just been updated – 1,000 quality icons that give most commercial ones a run for their money!
  • And for those that care, I’ve cleaned house a bit and upgraded the site to Wordpress 2.0 and a new theme which brings an assortment of visual goodies and delights for those that visit the site through a browser versus a newsreader. Please let me know of any problems that need addressing.
