The Making Of A Great Photograph

Such a topic may be more appropriate for the forum annals of Flickr, but I consistently notice that a lot of people take what they think are great pics … and they’re just not.

But that begs the larger question of what makes a great photograph. For a one sentence answer, I think it’s the image that best conveys a moment in time. There are many caveats to photography that could prove such an explanation as wrong, but it’s the best one I can come up with. All I really know, from several years of art school, and from the amazing pictures of a design I did for photojournalist is that few photographers have an true mastery of composition. Microsoft (of all places), has en excellent description/intro to photo composition.

David Nightingale, the photoblogger of Chromasia.com fame certainly has a great sense of space and composition and I recommend taking a look at some of his stuff if you have the chance. See the thumbnail index page, or examples 1, 2, or 3 to see what I’m talking about.
