FileMaker 8 Server Released

FileMaker Inc announced the release of version 8 of FileMaker Server, inline with the recent upgrade of the FileMaker product line. What I’m most interested to learn of is how this performs on multi-processor systems relative to single processor systems and if we can theoretically setup a RAID of Mac Minis to be multi-processor data-processing workhorses.

  1. I have just installed FM Server 8 and can no longer export my data to a text file for a merge with a word document. So this is an improvement over the Filelmaker 5. I skipped 6 & 7. Also, customer support is awful. You are referred to a knowledge base that has no information about exporting or to numerous consulting organizations. I have searched my Administrators Guide and the FM web site to no avail. I think I want my money back.

  2. Bobby,

I can’t see any reason why exporting records to a tab-delimited file wouldn’t work. It has certainly worked for my countless times before, but I have not tried it in FM8 to be honest. Were you able to accomplish this function before FM8? If not, then I would imagine it would be a bug in your code, otherwise it would clearly be a bug in FM.

What is the exact nature of your routine for exporting records? Does the problem occur in FM, FM Server, or Word? Maybe you need to use Excel as a glue between FM and Word.

    Keep us posted.

  3. I’ve had no direct experience with FM customer support. I. also, am generally not a fan of knowledge bases as I find navigating their structure and hierarchies tedious and annoying (Brother.com comes to mind) - Apple’s vibrant user support forum and knowledge base is generally good though. If you paid for your license then you have a right to a fully working product… get on FM’s case and get to the bottom of the problem!
