The Google OS

So it has been rumored that Google has been working on their own proprietary OS for ages, maybe their own flavor of Linux, or something like that. In stocking up the new Gateway ‘weapon’ with ditties like the new and fabulously free Konfabulator, Google Desktop Search, and then the Google Picasa Photo Management program, it dawned on me on this page that Google already has their OS, the web.

Wow, that’s NOT really interesting say many of you. But then again, it may be. Google has a lot of power around the web, not all of it, but surely enough to help advocate better web standards, etc. AND the simple fact that they own a great photo-management application (Picasa), Gmail, a Google portal service, Google Desktop Search a la Spotlight

But alas, the kicker is when they tell you can download all five in a single package and:

* Get all 5 with one click (5 MB)
* Search from any web page
* Search from any application
* Search your own computer for photos, files and email

I’m surprised they missed out on the acquisition of a service/site like Flickr. But Yahoo’s Konfabulator acquisition, while great for the developers of K… leaves me wondering what exactly Yahoo will do with the K… engine/widgets. They have publicly stated that they would like to tie in more Yahoo services i.e. traffic, images, search, but I fail to see where they are really going with the technology. Time will tell.
