Humming along with Tiger…
Oh druther, so I seemed to be a bit of a pessimist when it came to gripes about whether or not to install Panther. Truth be told, I’ve had no problems running the full suite of applications I usually sport: Office X.2004, FileMaker 6/7, Photoshop 7, Macromedia Suite 2004, Suitcase x1. I haven’t found myself using Spotlight as much as I thought I might, but the few times I have used it, it’s been a tremendous timesaver.
Safari was broken, for some reason, on Panther for me. Whatever it was, it is now working fully and beautifully. It’s uncontestably fast and while I do love FireFox, it takes an unexplainable 2-4 seconds for a new window to open up. Safari is instantaneously responsive. The RSS feature of Safari is nice as well and has had me weaned off of NetNewsWire and Sage. I have still yet to determine whether I actually prefer it over NetNewsWire. But the simple convenience of having all the RSS feeds in a bookmark folder is hard to beat in a solid browser.
Tiger is not a revelation as one might think. The upgrades are moreso under the hood, than apparent to the user aside from Safari, Automator, Dashboard, and Spotlight. It will be more interesting to see where developers push the technology behind Spotlight and Dashboard. In the meantime, we should all yell at Microsoft to get some kind of Entourage Spotlight plugin working. Supposedly, because of Entourage’s internal database format, this is more complicated than one would think.
