Technorati Tags: Yay, I finally GET them !
Wow, it took long enough and, amazingly, it doesn’t seem like this feature is built-in to Wordpress, but given Wordpress’ extensible and open source nature, I found a customization/hack (though, I really wouldn’t call it a ‘hack’ per se) to Wordpress that produces the perfect code for Technorati tags within the Wordpress post publishing interface. Care of FNKY Records, you simply download a reworked version of the quicktags.js file that goes in the WP-admin folder of your Wordpress installation. NOTE: YOU PROBABLY SHOULD BACKUP THE DEFAULT VERSION OF QUICKTAGS.JS BEFORE YOU OVERWRITE IT - YOU’VE BEEN WARNED I renamed the original to quicktags-backup.js and installed the new version by uploading it via FTP. Yeah, it’s THAT hard to install… Reload the Write Post page and voila, three buttons that help produce perfectly formatted and properly validating tag code. DJ Stew was even kind enough to produce a well-written read me to introduce how to tag properly, as well as even producing a small streaming Quicktime movie to demonstrate exactly how to use the hack. Well done!
It’s taken forever for me to wrap my head around the concept of tagging as being useful rather than just hype and fluff overflowing from the blogosphere cup. FNKY’s Quicktags hack for Wordpress is simple but, honestly a real timesaver and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone comfortable with perusing or altering the innards of their Wordpress installation.
