Spammers On The Prowl
Anyone with a WordPress 1.5 Dashboard was sure to notice the post from Weblog Tools with regard to “Spammers Getting Braver”. I would personally choose the word audacious or ballsy, but nonetheless, the post links to the ramblings of K-Squared whereby one of the bloggers was spammed by someone pretending to be the proprietor of another site that the blogger uses.
Indeed, it doesn’t surprise me. I receive roughly 3-4 emails a week that make it through my spam filter, claiming to be either eBay, PayPal, or some random bank that I have no dealing with (usually Citibank or the Bank Of Ohio). Most often, I simply forward the email to spoof@———— and then insert the domain being spoofed. Spoof@ebay.com, for example, provides nearly immediate feedback and it seems that the company looks into the matter seriously, most companies do. From a recent NY Times article (I’m still looking for the link), eBay revealed that they have an elaborate security department of nearly 1,000 people working full time to combat this kind of fraud which is so prevalent and has become so consistently linked to eBay.
Kelson’s article at K-squared is an interesting read and certainly worth perusing.
